Dongargaon is situated at 20.97°N 80.85°E with an average elevation of 304 metres. The town is surrounded by Rajnandgaon tehsil towards east, Chhuriya tehsil towards west, Dongarghar tehsil towards north and A.Chowki (Td) towards south. The nearby cities to Dongargaon include Dongargarh, Balod, Rajnandgaon and Dalli-Rajhara. Villages that are close to the city are Mohad, Nandiya, Maneri, Rudgaon and Bijabhatha. Dongargaon is a dry subtropical area. Temperature may go above 45 degree here during summer season. However, it may drop below 10 degree in winter period. The months between November to March are the best time to visit Dongargaon.

Balmeshwari Devi, one of the forms of Goddess Durga, is the deity in this temple. Bamleshwari Devi temple is located above a mountain peak, which has 1000 feet height from sea level. So the visitors have to climb 1100 steps to have the glimpse of the deity. As per the documents available, the construction of the temple is done during the rule of Raja Veersen. Another important shrine in Dongargaon is Chhoti Bamleshwari temple. Goddess Durga is worshipped here too. The temple rests atop a hill with 1600 feet height. Several devotees visit this place at the time of Navratri festival.
